Every job wants experience. Experience requires a job. This trap has crushed more talented beginners than any lack of ability ever has — and the standard advice ("just network!", "be passionate!") is useless to someone with no contacts and no idea where to start.

So here's the honest version of how people actually break in, written for someone starting with nothing.

The uncomfortable truth first

Nobody is going to discover you. There is no moment where the right person notices your potential and offers you a chance. That story happens in films. In reality, opportunities go to people who made themselves visible and easy to say yes to — and both of those are things you can build deliberately, starting this month.

The good news buried in that: it means it's not luck. It's a process.

The trap has one exit: proof

Employers don't actually want "experience". They want evidence that you can do the work without being a risk. A job is just the most common form of that evidence. It is not the only one.

The way out of the trap is to manufacture the evidence yourself:

  • Build things nobody asked you to build. A working website, a small app, a script that solves a real annoyance. Three finished things you can show beats a stack of certificates. Finished is the key word — an unfinished project proves nothing.
  • Solve a real problem for a real person, free if necessary. Build a site for your church, the shop down the road, your aunt's business. It's now a real client with a real deadline, and you have a real result to point at. Two or three of these and you're no longer a beginner.
  • Do the work publicly. Post what you're building and what you learned. It costs nothing, and it slowly turns you from "some person applying" into "the one who does that thing".

Nobody checks whether the experience was paid. They check whether it exists.

What actually gets a beginner hired

Depth over breadth. A hiring manager sees fifty applicants who have "done a bit of" everything. The one who can genuinely build a complete working thing in one stack stands out immediately. Pick one thing. Go deep. Breadth comes later and for free.

Communication. This is chronically underrated by beginners. Between two candidates of equal skill, the one who explains their thinking clearly, replies to emails promptly, and shows up on time wins every single time. Many technical people are poor at this, which makes it an easy edge to take.

Evidence of self-teaching. Every tech job involves learning things nobody taught you. When you can say "I hit this problem, here's how I worked it out," you're demonstrating the single most valuable trait a junior can have — you'll be able to grow without being carried.

Being easy to work with. Nobody says this out loud, but people hire people they want to sit near. Reliable and pleasant beats brilliant and difficult in almost every real team.

Where to actually look

Don't only fire CVs into online job boards — that's the most crowded, lowest-odds channel that exists. Try the channels nobody bothers with:

  • Small local businesses who need a website or a system but would never post a formal job ad. This is where a huge amount of first work comes from.
  • Freelance platforms — start small, take an unglamorous first job to get the first review, build from there.
  • Internships and attachments, even unpaid short ones, if you genuinely can afford the time. Treat them as a chance to collect proof and references, not as charity you owe someone.
  • Direct messages to companies with no advert. "I built X, I noticed you do Y, can I help?" gets a shockingly high reply rate simply because almost nobody does it.

The timeline nobody admits

This takes months, not weeks. Real months of building things while nothing seems to be happening. Most people quit somewhere in that stretch, which is precisely why the ones who don't quit eventually get in — the competition thins out.

Start today with one thing: pick a skill, build one small complete thing this month, and show it to someone. Then do it again. In six months you'll have a portfolio, some references, and a completely different set of options.
